SLALOM NEW ZEALAND - SITES
Wairoa River - Tauranga
|
This site is situated on the state highway between Tauranga and Hamilton just
past a power station and over the river bridge park on the left. The river only
flows 26 days a year, mostly on Sundays 11-4 at the slalom course in Summer.
The river is narrow and fast and features tight eddies and waves about a metre
high. Suitable for continuous runs only and not for circulating around a pool.
Wires hang at the river but talk to the locals about when they have gates up or
take your own. The river trip is well worth a go in a plastic boat with lots of
drops and rapids

Tarawera River-Kawerau
|
The best site is in town by the rugby club. Follow signs to Tarawera falls and
just before you cross the river to enter the forest turn right and park by the
rugby club. The site has wires hanging but you need to take gates. The river
level stays almost exactly the same all year and is fast with small holes fast
waves and tight eddies. Good for full or split runs. The river above the site
has 20km of grade 2/3

Kaituna River Okere Falls - Rotorua
|
The site is under the road bridge in Okere falls about 20 km from Rotorua on
the highway to Tauranga and Te Puke. It has about 35 permanent gates hanging
and is good for all types of training from beginner to international and you
can also recirculate around the pools or use the whole site for endurance
loops. The site can be used all year round. Locally the river trip is fantastic
with several waterfalls and there are also plenty of lakes to paddle. There is
a campground a short paddle from the course and plenty of accommodation in
Rotorua.

Reids Farm - Taupo
|
The site is situated on the Huka falls loop road just North of Taupo off the
main highway. The water is fast moving almost flat water and good for beginners
or technique and endurance training. The site is about to be updated as at
present there are no wires up. You can camp on site only 2 minutes from town.
Just upstream there are hot pools flowing in to the river. Nearby are Huka
falls for the brave and the World famous Full James surf wave 10 minutes drive
away 3km below the Aratiatia power station.

Mangahao - Shannon
[Photos]
|
Mangahao is New Zealand's premier race. It has a flow of 13 m3.s-1 and a
gradient of 6m over the 350m length course. It has a permanent gate system for
training and during a normal summer the course has water flowing on a regular
basis. Because the site is dam-controlled, flows are held constant, adding to
the racing potential that it offers. There is a small town (Shannon) 5 minutes
drive from the course.
